Dear Parents,
Welcome to third grade at the newly renovated Judson School. I am very pleased to be your child's third grade teacher. My first teaching experiences were in Waterbury and Middlebury teaching special education. I also did some part time teaching while my boys were younger. For the past fifteen years I have been teaching third grade. The first six were at Baldwin and the last nine at Judson.
I reside in Watertown with my husband John. I have two sons aged 25 and 23. My oldest, John, is married and in medical school and my younger son Christopher is presently working in Arlington, Virginia and in the process of applying to medical school. I enjoy reading, listening to music, cooking, gardening, and using the computer.
Among some of the things the students learn in third grade are reading strategies, multiplication, cursive writing, and more developed writing skills.
I hope you will find this web page helpful. This is a way to keep you informed of assignments and other happenings in the classroom. I generally update it weekly. Students are still responsible to record homework assignments daily in class in the agenda that has been generously provided by the PTA. Homework is written on the board in the classroom for them to copy from to their agenda. Students are learning responsibility by copying their assignments daily into the agenda.
Please sign and return all tests that are sent home. I will keep them for one marking period and return them at the beginning of the next marking period. If you would like a copy of the signed test please let me know.
Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions. I will get in touch with you as soon as possible. A note or phone call should be used for anything that needs immediate attention rather than the email.

What We Are Learning
This year I will be using this section to let you know what skills we are studying in the different academic areas. I will update it periodically as needed.
Our literacy block includes reading, language arts, and writing. The fourth theme in Storytown is Tales We Tell. Students will learn strategies good readers use to build reading comprehension. They will learn techniques to answer questions about what they have read using examples and details to support their response. Mrs. Stepka will offer support to help the students improve their reading skills. In language arts students will be reviewing writing complete sentences. They will learn correct punctuation and capitalization. The writing component involves students Students working on personal narrative writing and its characteristics. Students will use paragraphing, elaboration, and vocabulary to enhance their writing. Mrs. Payne will offer support to the students to help them become better writers. She is now focusing on writing great beginnings. Students will learn to include characters and setting using descriptive words in their beginning.
Students will be learning about area and perimeterthis week as well as reviewing for the CMT.
We will resume with science at the end of the week Students will be studying conservation. We will begin by exploring the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle).
